The Film 'Together' Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

Here's a test for partners in committed relationships who are fans of the horror genre: Get comfortable with your partner and view Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its online premiere via Hulu. At first glance, it may seem like standard physical horror, but inside Together resides a intense meditation about how we choose to love our partners.

A Directorial Debut Delving into The Nuances of Love

Together marks the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have stayed together for a decade. United in marriage in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a unique chemistry to their characters, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The plot starts when Millie and Tim transition from the metropolis to the country for professional reasons. A commonly used story element, admittedly, but that’s largely where the tropes conclude. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and the two tumble into an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity starts to affect the duo. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.

The entire film is a gradually intensifying of scares, weaving in elements of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes during something grotesque). Shanks orchestrates these parts expertly and presents them in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is suffering due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and far away from his social circle. He fears the concept of totally forfeiting his individual identity in another person. This fear is intensified by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he avoids making one partner or the other the clear bad guy.

The couple confront the type of challenges that come with most partnerships a decade in. At their core, they have affection for one another. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Thematic Depth

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these fears of excessive reliance and fully committing to a partner, the allegory does not come across as overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the movie's final takeaway about codependent relationships. It has been said that single viewers have understood the narrative as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, certain partners having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the ending inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your other half and say, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can experience right now.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
